Ephesians 04:29 (AMP)
Do not let unwholesome [foul, profane, worthless, vulgar] words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear [you speak].
Words are an integral part of every believer’s life. That is because our words have power. In fact
2 Timothy 02:16a, admonishes the saint to stay away from pious talk because words are not mere words. Remembering our identity as kings and priests unto our God (Recall: Revelation 01:06, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen), Ecclesiastes 08:04a (NIV) rendering “Since a king’s word is supreme…” reminds us a lot about our words being supreme. Another translation would render that where the word of a king is, there is power. Therefore, our words are supreme, they have power, they are not just mere words.
We then become more conscious of what we say, when we say it and to who we say it. We cannot just have talk like that of the world. Our talk, as per our lead verse, ought to be that which builds up others. Our words ought to minister life and grace to every of our hearers. In fact, Ephesians 01:23 (MSG) reminds us that the Church is Christ’s body, in which He speaks and acts. Therefore, Christ speaks through us and the world ought to hear Christ minister to them through our talk.
I also like the fact that our lead verse emphasizes that the building up is according to the need and the talk. Therefore, we need to be sure our talk is passing the right message at the right time. I wish to point out here that at times the needs or occasions do not allow us to say certain things, yet they are true. We ought to be very conscious when having conversations. This is whether we are at home with our families, or whether we are interacting with colleagues and friends. Our talk always ought to be wholesome.
Remember that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, therefore fill yourself with the right substance and you will have no challenge speaking the right thing. Minister life and Grace to every of your hearers.
CALL TO ACTION:
I will watch what I say to every of my hearers. I will only say that which builds up and edifies them. Christ speaks through me and therefore I only speak Christ’s kind of language. It is one of love and grace all days.
